Sometimes we forget the differences between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, so I thought I would write a short post to explain the differences in my own simple way.
Simply put, Memorial Day (today) is a US Federal Holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor and mourn all US Military Personnel who have died while serving in the US Armed Forces, died in military service. The tradition is started as early as the 1860’s in various US states and eventually became a US Federal Holiday.
Veterans Day is a US Federal Holiday observed on November 11th to honor and celebrate all US Military Veterans, living and dead. This tradition coincides with other remembrances observed on the same day, such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day…celebrating the end of WWI and observed by other nations.
So, Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring the dead while Veterans Day is a day for celebrating the end of WWI and honoring US Military Veterans.
Regardless, this is an important day of remembering and honoring those who died while serving to protect our freedoms.
