Race Review: Run With The Burros (Donkey) Race- April 13th, 2024

This was our first Donkey Race, so we were really excited to go up and support the only donkey race currently in California, the “Run With the Burros” Race put on by California Breakfast Burritos in Inokern, California.

Whew, it’s a long title but so much to pack into a day of driving. The actual drive time wasn’t too bad for this one and the drive was spectacular and beautiful, as you follow history through time meandering into the areas that encompass some of the worst of the Indian Wars fought in the West.

We were able to get tickets for our cave tour, knock out the cave tour and see the Hot Springs Mammoth site in the same day. While it was hectic, there’s no way I would have missed it.

We’d made it to the Black Hills by early afternoon. Even though we knew there was rain and it was chilly, we were determined to chase our nations history to go see Mt. Rushmore and the surrounding areas. It didn’t disappoint and I’d love to go back! pssst: May the 4th be with you!

Cheyenne straight through to the Black Hills in one day is totally doable; but what a shock it was to drive for hours through a sea of flat plains, without a hill or mountain in sight. It was almost eerie. But the Black Hills didn’t disappoint.

Although we took this roadtrip in summer, the info is still valid and the trip fresh in my mind as if it were yesterday. So here we go-

After the longest driving day of the roadtrip, we finally arrive at Dinosaur National Monument…which totally blew away our expectations. Here’s a quick run down and pictures of Dinosaur National Monument.

Our longest travel day of the entire roadtrip, heading from Zion National Park to Dinosaur National Monument in one push. As the crow flies this didn’t look like a long trip, but when you add various terrain and one lane roads to the mix, it became an all day affair. But wow, it was sooo worth it.

We sold our sailboat and our skoolie but we still love to travel with our kids. So these posts will highlight some of the extraordinarily places our most recent travels have taken us. This was our first camping roadtrip since leaving the boat, so a bit of a shakedown for all of us.
