A family adapts to life back in the U.S. after years spent on a cruising sailboat.

I’m not sure what else to say to start off this post except to say that 2023 has been a year of massive changes for the LF2TS crew.  I like change in life when it’s positive and takes things to a better place, a higher level.  I’m not one for change just to say….things changed.  But this year has been all about change, family upheaval and adaptation for the LiveFree2TravelSlow crew.  We’ve faced it head on, adapted, overcome and all that merry stuff.  Not everything has been great fun….but like I said, we’ve gotten through it.

We started 2023 with a bang. Tulum’s engine finally turned over after the 3rd set of mechanics worked on it and we had ignition.
Our final picture in front of Tulum-5, the evening before we flew out of Panama.
Early February of 2023. Last look at Tulum. She kept our family moving and safe for over 5 years.
After Tulum-5 we flew back to the US and bought a skoolie. This is a school bus repurposed and reused. Ours was a 40-ft Bluebird diesel pusher. We proceeded to tour the US…with kids, Great Dane and cat.  Our landslip at KOA Davie, Fl.  We also changed the website name when we returned to the US.  We used to be http://www.LiveFree2SailFast, but made the change to http://www.LiveFree2TravelSlow.  Travel by boat or bus or burro is pretty slow.
The girls on top of the bus at sunset, at one of the most haunted places in New Mexico. And yes…it was cold.
Passing the bus to a new family in late summer.

In early summer we arrived back in Southern California and made the decision to settle near family, buying house and property that has become the Adventure Base Ranch (a fixer-upper).  We bought in a town a bit further out from urban sprawl where you can still find housing with land for a somewhat affordable pricing.  IE….somewhat lower cost of living traded for the lack of strip malls and traffic.  A good trade in my book.

The next change for the crew was…..s c h o o l  for our teenagers and a J. O. B. for the HelmsMistress.  We managed those hurdles with flying colors.  Then came the newest additions to the family….puppy, kitty (rescued), snakes (one rescued) and in late October we took the leap and adopted two donkey’s (from BLM Ridgecrest).  The plan for the donkey’s is to train them to race…eventually.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all, hope it was fun reading this adventure.  As a family, we’re settling into school, work, more travel and upcoming burro racing.
