You start the game in the Shrine of Resurrection, a shrine that doesn’t do much but is pretty helpful in the lore: the story is a hundred years ago, a prophecy was issued that Calamity Ganon, antagonist of the game, is to rise again, along with Link, the Master Sword’s wielder and Ganon’s enemy, and Zelda, the princess with the sacred powers that will lock Ganon away.

Anywho guys, I have decided to start something new: because I like BotWand I need to do more posts on BotW, I present to you: A BotW region guide!   These guides will go region by region, and they’ll go by the order you discover them (with some wiggle room considering that every game played is different), so therefore we’ll start with the Great Plateau, where every player spends their first couple hours getting acquainted with the game before venturing open world.

Taking heed from their ancestors 10,000 years prior (this whole Calamity Ganon apocalypse thing has been repeating itself for a while), Hyrule unearths the Divine beasts, four huge mechanical animals that are piloted by a champion of one of the four races, and the guardian army, more mechanical beasts that, while quite small compared to the divine beasts, are still taller than an average human. All is going well: Link has his sword, the divine beasts and guardians are ready, except- oh no! there’s a problem! Zelda, the wielder of the sacred powers that would seal Ganon away, doesn’t know how to use her powers! She was supposed to be taught how to use them by her mother, but she died when Zelda was young, leaving her with absolutely no idea what to do. The day when Ganon is prophesized to return looms near, but still Zelda doesn’t know what to do. In desperation, she visits the three sacred springs of the goddesses to pray, but upon returning from each one with no luck, Ganon awakens! While Zelda, link, and the champions are away from the castle, Ganon takes over the guardians and the divine beasts and kills everyone in the castle. The champions are killed trying to gain control of their divine beasts, and just as link is struck down with a guardian’s laser beam, Zelda gains control over her powers and defeats the guardian. Then her and Impa, the leader of the Sheikah tribe, bring Link to the shrine of resurrection to try and bring him back to life, then Zelda goes to confront Ganon. Skip forward a hundred years, you are Link in the shrine of resurrection, sans all memories. The region that the shrine of resurrection is in is the Great Plateau, today’s topic. Okay, backstories thus explained, let me give you the highlights: the Great Plateau is in the middle of Hyrule, and, hence the name, is a large plateau. Any attempts to jump of could not lead to a surer death. You will spend you first couple hours here, completing the main story quest and collecting weapons, fighting monsters, and grabbing korok seeds. There are four total shrines on the plateau, and the Great Plateau tower. The only NPC on the Plateau, other than the Koroks, is the old man, aka King Rhoam. He will give you your first main-story quest, which will thus lead you to getting off the plateau, but that’s for later. There is a total of 17 Korok seeds on the plateau which you can later trade to Hestu.

Most of the plateau is a moderate temperature, with the only exception being the Mount Hylia area, which has biting colds that can only be kept away with either warm food, a flame, or the appropriate clothes. Near the large gateway entrance between the River of the Dead and the Temple of Time, some Spicy Pepper bushes can be found. When cooked together (there is a Bokoblin camp with a cooking pot and fire to the Northwest of the gate, or in some ruins just inside the entrance there is also another unlit cooking pot), they create a dish that can warm you for a certain amount of time. If you’re looking for a more permanent solution, however, there is a clothing item called the Warm Doublet that will provide you with enough warmth to explore the cold quite happily. There are two ways to get it: either replicate the old man’s forgotten recipe that can be found in his journal (hint: Spicy Pepper, Hyrule bass, Hylian Shroom), or climb to the top of Mt. Hylia while keeping warm with cooked Spicy Peppers, and at the top the old man shall reward you with his Warm Doublet.

The only monsters that be found on the plateau are Chuchus, Bokoblins, Keese, Stal monsters, and a single Stone Talus in the Northwest corner which can be easily defeated using mining, high damage, or just any heavy weapons on the ore deposit on its back.

That’s it for this post considering there isn’t much in the way of the Great Plateau, but next post should be a bit more interesting. Thanks for reading, and come back next week!

Written by kids…for kids of all ages.  Our kids live full time on a cruising sailboat currently in Panama.  They create, write and post these stories with little guidance by us (the parents) as to content, but we do give everything a quick read.

We’re one day away from transiting the Panama Canal and excitement on the boat is building.  We had eventful and challenging transits to get here from Costa Rica, not at all the sailing and cruising we expected but that’s the nature of the game.  Tomorrow morning we’ll run the ditch and by the time you read her next post (this coming Friday) we should be in the Caribbean.  We LOVE you guys reading and following us and invite you to continue to follow us, as we’re committed to putting out the best content we can manage with NO fees.
