A day cruise to cap off a week of classic Greek historic sites.

Normally this travel series posts on Saturday but I missed yesterday as I had to get up early and get out on the rocks…we have a National Park in our backyard.  So I didn’t have time to get this post cleaned up and ready to go.  But I’m up early to get it ready for publication today….hope you like.  Have a great Sunday.

On our last day in Greece, we were able to get out into the Mediterranean and cruise the Saronic Gulf to several classic Greek Isles, allowing everyone to take a deep breath and enjoy the crisp sea air.

We started the day by heading from our hotel into Athens, to get to the Marina. On the way, we passed this new building, which will soon be the tallest building in Greece.

Once at the Marina, we soon boarded our tour boat (ship), which is actually a ferry for cargo and people to all the islands it services, but also takes regular tourists like us out to the islands….for brief stops while the ship offloads people and light cargo (no cars) on a regular basis.  This is a normal, daily run out to these islands, some people using it for commuting to work in Athens or out to the islands.  But we were there purely to get out on the water and see a few Greek Islands, the lure of the sea good for us.

Our ship (Cosmos) would take us out to three different Greek Islands, staying on the islands no more than an hour or so….just enough time for the tourists to get off, spend our money and then get back on and shuttle to the next island.  Here’s the map of our day:

First, we crossed the Saronic Gulf and headed to Hydra, then over to Poros and finally to Aigina….before getting back to Athens with the setting sun.
Pulling into Hydra. The rumor that Brad Pitt might be here filming a movie quickly went round the ship. He had been here, but was gone already.
Hydra….with good fortifications.

A cat in Hydra. Be prepared for ALOT of cats in Greece. They’re not pets but they’re also not wild, as they’re secretly fed out of sight of the tourists.
Hydra
Heading into Poros. This place is unique as it’s quite close to the mainland, but the island developed its own culture.  That’s the mainland on the left and the island on the right.
Heading out of Poros.  Again, mainland (Galatis) on the right and island (Poros) on the left.
The clock tower at Poros, built in 1927.  Although there’s an uphill walk to get there, the views are said to be second to none.
Poros
Cruising the Med.
Approaching Aigina.
Aigina, where famous Pistachios are grown. Everything here was Pistachio….really good ice cream and a crappy beach.
Heading back to Athens.
The islands in the distance.

From the dock.

But once back at the dock, the evening wasn’t over, as we were wisked away on the bus back toward our hotel area…which was in a very fashionable area, called the Athenian Riviera.  We stopped a few blocks from our hotel and walked a couple blocks to a very, very nice restaurant that served giant souvlaki.  A really good meal on our last night in Greece, I was impressed.  After this, we were back to our hotel to pack and get some sleep before a long day on the plane home, tomorrow.

One or two more posts and I’ll finish out my series on our Greek Odyssey, then start a new series.  This series has been especially interesting because I wasn’t as “in” the moment in Greece as I should have been, so writing and going through all my photos takes me back to these spectacular places we visited.  We love traveling and we love writing about it, thanks for reading.
