Cheyenne straight through to the Black Hills in one day is totally doable; but what a shock it was to drive for hours through a sea of flat plains, without a hill or mountain in sight. It was almost eerie. But the Black Hills didn't disappoint.

The day before, there had been torrential downpours between our train museum time and the evening “Hell on Wheels Rodeo” but we were not much deterred.  We woke rested to clearing skys and brisk morning weather.  After a quick stop at a large Walmart, we were off for another long drive day, this time through the flatlands into the Black Hills.

The drive time told us it was going to be a significant day behind the wheel, but we still wanted to get to the Black Hills with enough time to see the sights, get some lunch and set up our camp site after two days in a hotel.  Nope, can’t get spoiled by hotel rooms, heated showers and real toilets…we needed to be back out in the clean air and occasional rain.  Black Hills camping would not disappoint.

After time on the large and established Highway 25, we turned off onto smaller roads and started the trek across instead of up Wyoming and eventually made into South Dakota.  Clouds had began to gather and we were in for more rain, but everything in the truck was put away and covered, so we carried on.  Once into South Dakota, it was up into the Black Hills, which are simply gorgeous.

Just after two, we made it into Custer, South Dakota.  The rest of the story will be in another post!

This website (blog) is entirely independent and we practice what we write about.  We really do travel slow, take all our own photos and write all our own stories.  This allows up us to travel when and where we want and be on the Adventure Base as needed.  Thank you for reading, more next week as I’ve started writing again after a hiatus to recharge the writing mojo.
