“International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers of Albany, Oregon,[1] who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate(that is, in English with a stereotypical West Country accent).[2] It has since been adopted by the Pastafarianism movement.[3]”

Yup, I don’t usually post on Thursday’s but this international holiday only comes around once a year…September 19th…INTERNATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY!!!
Created by two guys during a racquetball game after one was injured and yelled….”arrrg”, this holiday has gone on to international fame and acclaim. I urge you to take it very seriously and include others in your pirate speech and swagger.
As an actual ships Captain who has sailed in international pirate waters, I tell you this holiday is no laughing matter. You MUST understand the lingo in order to effectively communicate with the other pirate souls around you as you meander down the plank of life. Be ready, be armed with your pirate speech and the pirate name generator.

This holiday is all well and good until you actually meet someone who was captured and held hostage by Somali pirates (for real). It was pretty sobering to hear and read the story; but things ended safely for him and he is now on his own boat, with his family, sailing the world. Nuff said, have fun on this holiday!
Here’s a few of the other stories I’ve written to celebrate this auspicious day:
