Mini-donkey's are not genetically altered by humans to be perfectly small size versions of standard donkey's....they evolved this way and are originally thought to come from the islands of Sicily and Sardinia in the Mediterranean.

We already have a thing for donkeys, but mini-donkeys steal my heart when I’m around them.  So on this trip, I took off to visit one of the folks in our local area who specifically breed mini-donkeys; “Wee Ass Haven” in Moreno Valley, Ca.  Mini-donkeys are not genetically altered by humans to be perfectly small size versions of standards….they evolved this way and are originally thought to come from the islands of Sicily and Sardinia in the Mediterranean.

We don’t have much experience with mini-donkeys…thus my trip to this local premier breeder was to meet the donks in person, meet the owner/breeders and just get to know personalities.  What a rewarding trip, because Wee Ass Haven has multiple pregnant jennies onsite that I was able to meet + they have their own jacks, who I met also.  These animals were all mellow and kind, obviously well taken care of and well trained to human interaction.  I fell in love at first sight, especially when I was able to walk around and interact with the mini-herd out in an open paddock.  Breeder speak is beyond me, but I especially appreciate that the owners know exactly which donks the babies come from, what papers will be on which animals and how they might do in conformation and showing.  It also tells me that these animals will probably have fewer health issues, because Wee Ass Haven isn’t a backyard breeding setup, they have a first class facility.  Loved my visit here, can’t wait to go back and check out the babies when they arrive.  Here’s some of my pics:

This gentle jenny is due soonest, sometime in early January.
One of the two jacks at Wee Ass Haven, kept separate from jennies.  He had just done a dirt roll and was in a pretty chill mood.
One of the geldings in the herd, gentle and curious.
Part of the mini-donkey herd. There’s a few geldings but mostly jennies…and a few pregnant ones. They were all gentle and curious, obviously well taken care of by doting owners.
One of the most interesting things about this visit to Wee Ass Haven is that there is a large wild herd of standard donkeys who live in the area. The whole ranch is full of wild donkeys. Here’s a mother and baby who just stood looking at us as we chatted.
