Kingman AZ to Albuquerque NM on the I-40 by EV, as part of our 2025 summer trip from California to Colorado. We were going on the trip so I could take a short donkey trimming internship with one of the best donkey farriers around. But we knew we were on a timeline, so we headed east, doing big miles over a couple days.
The first night of the trip we stayed in Kingman, AZ to visit relatives….and we were lucky there was Rivian Adventure Network chargers there, which we elected to use on the morning of the second day. That morning, we were the only ones on these chargers and sat for just about 17 minutes to get the Rivian to 90%. After that, we headed out going east on I-40 on a crisp beautiful driving day. Soon we passed through Flagstaff and decided to stop at the next set of Rivian chargers….in Holbrook AZ. We immediately grabbed a charger and found some lunch, a great spot to recharge to 95%.

After Holbrook, we were making great time, so we decided we had the time to hit Petrified Forest National Park, which the I-40 cuts through. For this one, we were able to quickly get off the freeway, spend some time in the visitors center and then had to get back on the I-40 and continue on. Most of this National Park is actually south of the freeway and a bit of a drive…so we opted to skip these portions in favor of getting into Albuquerque during the daylight. After a few more hours of driving, we made it….finding the hotel and getting checked in. Smartly, the HelmsMistress had booked us into a spot with charging at the hotel, so we were able to simply plug in after dinner…..and charge.
After checking in, we headed out to one of the best restaurants in the southwest…El Pinto Mexican Restaurant and Bar. This place has its own salsa line and the bar has hundreds of different bottles of tequila. We had a great dinner and headed back to the hotel for some sleep.
